Poem relating to my father

A Poem by Edward A. Guest

" Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't", but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he tried.
So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing,
That couldn't be done and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it"
But he took off his coat and he took of his hat,
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin
Just take off your coat and go to it.
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done," and you'll do it."

  1. Im so sorry to hear about your father's passing. I heard you speak at the NLCP Summit last week, but we didn't get a chance to meet. Your story is inspirational, and I'm sure your father was very proud of you. I know this will be a difficult time for you. Having lost my mother on December 8th of this year, I know that nothing feels the way you'd anticipated it, there's a lot of things that feel like a blur, and it's not something that goes away easily. But it sounds like your dad was an incredible man and you were lucky to have him, as he was lucky to have you. He will be with you always, guiding you through everything you do in your journey of life.

  2. Jerrold, I have just finished reading all your posts since your transplant. You have a very inspirational story, and a testamony to all. May God continue to bring you healing and restoration back to "normalcy". I'm sorry to read about the passing of your father, but it is good to know that he is with The Father! PTL!

  3. Jerrold,
    I'm so sorry to read of the loss of your father. Words themselves cannot bring comfort or peace, but knowing you will see him again and that he's with his Heavenly Father can sustain you at this time. It's how I find comfort of my own as I journey without my mom and daughter. We'll keep you and your family in our prayers.

  4. Happy Father's Day to you! I'm sure it is with mixed emotions. I heard you were in NC while I was at Duke visiting with Bo and was hoping to get to meet you. You are an amazing person!
